Information for 2019-2020

For the 2019-2020 school year LM A Cappella will run one or two groups based on the level of interest: Ace Harmony and Soulace.

Ace Harmony is a mixed group for singers of all voice parts, while Soulace is intended for only treble voices (soprano and alto in an SATB choir). Both groups will prepare and perform music from a variety of popular a cappella styles including barbershop, traditional glee club material, and contemporary a cappella. Admission to both groups is by audition. The size of each group has not been determined, but will likely not exceed 16-20 each; the size of a traditional collegiate-style a cappella group.

Ace Harmony will rehearse on Mondays from 3:00-4:00pm and Wednesdays from 6:00-8:00pm throughout the school year. Soulace will rehearse on Mondays from 6:00-8:00pm and 3:00-4:00pm throughout the school year.

Each group will have an appointed student Music Directors and Group Presidents. These positions will be chosen from among applicants in June of 2019, before the end of the 2018-2019 school year. If you are interested in either of these positions, please see below for more information about what these positions entail and how to apply for them.

Auditions will be held after school from 3:00-5:00 on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday during the week of Sept. 23-27. Returning members will be permitted to audition early on an appointment basis. Contact Mr. Hunnex to schedule an early audition. To schedule a regular audition, sign up for a time in the LMHS choir room starting Sept. 16.

As in the past there will be positions for sound engineers available as well. If you are interested in that, please see Mr. Hunnex.

Leadership Positions

As mentioned above, each LMAC group this year will have appointed student officers: Music Directors and Presidents.

A music director is expected to be able to run a rehearsal, teach parts, and lead the group both on and off stage. Music directors should have strong piano skills, sight-singing skills, or both. They should also be able to demonstrate and coach good vocal technique and be experienced in an a cappella setting. Experience with a cappella arranging and/or composition is not necessary, but would be advantageous.

A group president is expected to share many of the leadership qualities found in a music director, but with less of an emphasis on leading a rehearsal and teaching actual parts. The president should be prepared to take on some administrative roles within the group. During rehearsals, they should assist the music director as needed, particularly in helping to maintain proper focus to allow for an effective rehearsal.

One feature of next year’s schedule is that each group will be expected to rehearse on their own periodically. The frequency and timing of these rehearsals during the school year will vary according to the particular situation of each group, and may change drastically from one month to the next. It is the responsibility of the two group officers to make sure those rehearsals are efficient and worthwhile. In addition, the officers may be called upon to assist Mr. Hunnex in regular rehearsals (running sectionals, etc.).

Some information about the application process:

  • If you wish to apply for a position, please notify Mr. Hunnex by Friday, 24 May. He will provide you with audition and interview materials.
  • Because officers must be members of the group they work with, they must complete an audition as part of their application process. The result of that audition will only be released if they are chosen for an officer position. For any applicants who are not chosen for an officer position, the audition result will remain sealed over the summer and will be released with the full results in the fall.
  • Applicants will also be required to complete an interview with Mr. Hunnex. Interviews (and auditions) will take place by appointment during the week of May 28-31.
